What should you measure before choosing a tablecloth?
Record three things before choosing a finished cloth size:
- Table shape: round, square, rectangular or another shape.
- Tabletop dimensions: diameter for a round table; length and width for a square or rectangular table.
- Table height: the distance from the floor to the tabletop.
Then record the intended application and desired drop—the distance the cloth should hang below the tabletop edge. Use one unit throughout the brief. Do not mix a table measurement in inches with a drop in centimetres.
If several furniture types are used across a venue, give each one its own row. A restaurant table and a high cocktail table should not share a specification simply because their tops have a similar width.
How do you calculate a round tablecloth size?
Cloth diameter = table diameter + (2 × desired drop).
For example, a round table with a diameter of 180 cm and a chosen drop of 50 cm gives:
180 + (2 × 50) = 280 cm cloth diameter.
The cloth extends beyond two opposite edges of the table, which is why the drop is added twice. This example is a calculation, not a recommended drop for every hotel or a stock-size promise.
To check a cloth you already have, reverse the calculation:
Drop = (cloth diameter − table diameter) ÷ 2.
A 280 cm round cloth centred on a 180 cm round table therefore gives a geometric drop of 50 cm. A cloth smaller than the tabletop does not provide the intended overhang.
How do you calculate a rectangular tablecloth size?
For the same drop on all four sides:
Cloth length = table length + (2 × desired drop).
Cloth width = table width + (2 × desired drop).
A 180 × 90 cm table with a chosen drop of 30 cm gives a cloth measuring 240 × 150 cm:
- Length: 180 + (2 × 30) = 240 cm.
- Width: 90 + (2 × 30) = 150 cm.
When checking an existing rectangular cloth, calculate the end drop and side drop separately. A cloth can provide the intended coverage along its length but be too narrow across its width.
These formulas describe the drop at the straight edges of a centred cloth. Check the corner drape on the actual table, especially for a floor-length setup; equal edge drops do not guarantee identical clearance at the corners.
How should you choose the drop?
Choose it around the furniture and service setup, rather than starting with a universal “hotel standard.” Use a sample or physical mock-up to review:
- Whether the cloth provides the desired visual coverage.
- How it sits with chairs, place settings and seated guests.
- Whether staff can access the table as intended.
- Whether the edges and corners have the required floor clearance.
For an idealised floor-length calculation, the drop equals the measured table height. Where clearance is required, specify it explicitly and review the resulting appearance. Do not assume all banquet tables have the same height.
Can fitted or stretch covers use the same formula?
No. The loose-cloth formulas above do not define the pattern or finished size of a fitted or stretch cover.
Provide the exact furniture dimensions and photographs or a drawing showing its shape, base and any openings or access requirements. Confirm the construction and fit through a separate review. A round tabletop measurement alone is not enough to specify every fitted cover.

How do you organise a mixed-table order?
Use one line for each furniture type and selected presentation. The following numbers are illustrative planning examples only, not actual orders or ZIHUI catalog sizes.

Keep the selected fabric, color, edge treatment and application alongside each row. If the tablecloths will be paired with hotel napkins, review the samples together for the intended table setting. Matching color names alone do not confirm a matching appearance across different fabrics.
What should you confirm before ordering?
The calculated size is the starting point for a specification review. Confirm:
- The table measurements, measurement units and intended drop.
- The agreed finished dimensions and how they will be checked.
- Fabric composition, color, pattern and edge construction.
- Sample fit on the intended furniture, including corners and access.
- Any laundering-related dimensional requirements and applicable tolerances.
- Quantities by specification, destination and required timing.
Do not add an assumed shrinkage percentage to every calculation. Ask for the selected fabric and finished-dimension requirements to be reviewed together. This guide does not specify a universal wash allowance or manufacturing tolerance.
